Beautiful, determined, and ready to take Chicago by storm, Simone is this week's ChiStyle model. A resident of Edgewater, she grew up in Chicago's south-side and attended the University of Illinois, majoring in Physics. "I've always loved science and being able to learn about movement, speed, and force," Simone stated. "It's something that I've really enjoyed since my childhood and one of the things I can practice and see everyday." PdM had the pleasure of meeting in Simone's condo, which had a cozy fireplace. "It's getting cold out there," she mentioned laughing. "I just wish we had some snow already!" A current elementary school teacher on the near south-side, Simone places her efforts in fostering a love of learning to her children. "I want them to grow up and become somebody in life," she stated with a smile on her face. "I tell them, 'If you aren't active, confident, or asking the right questions someone will do all the work - and take the credit - for you.'" By helping her students obtain a sense of goals and guiding them in the right path, Simone believes teachers really make a difference. "I don't think it's fair that teachers across our nation are given such a negative rep," she stated confidently. "We are the ones who are shaping your children, the future of our country, and we also guide them towards a good path: don't hate." Name: Simone Age: 25 Profession: I'm a physics teacher. Fashion icon: My grandmother taught me that no matter what you wear, you must always wear it with style and plenty of class. She hand-knit all of her sweaters, including 3 for me, which I still have. Goals and aspirations: I would like to become a high school administrator one day while also helping young minds achieve their educational goals, such as going to college or choosing a major right for them. Education in our country is going through some rough times and I want to help as much as I can. Favorite cuisine: I really like Mexican food. My favorite dishes are enchiladas, tortas, and flautas. There is something about the great variety in this cuisine that appeals to my taste buds. You love Chicago because...: It's my city. My family, friends, job, and life revolves around such a diverse metropolis. You can go to a baseball game on the south-side and find yourself at a bar in Uptown 20 minutes later. There is always something to do and we can always learn from one another.
Chicago could improve...: I love Chicago, but our schools need serious makeovers. We need to place resources and a strong emphasis on educating the middle class because they make up the majority. Some of the students I teach come from broken families, and after school programs really make a difference in their lives. Without these programs, or art and music, some great talent is being wasted by not tapping into these kids' potential. It's very sad. Word of wisdom: Work hard for your goals. I believe we can do anything we set our minds to, but that requires hard-work and time. Prioritize your life and make the good things come to you by being persistent. By Ogilvie Zavala | Arts Editor It's a Friday night, I am meeting up with a few friends in 20 minutes, and I have absolutely no idea what to wear?! After rummaging through my closet to find the best shoes for the evening, I came across my favorite pair of shoes, the Lacoste Leren. These shoes not only reflect my passion for the outdoors, but my appreciation for urban sophistication. Whether you are going out for drinks with friends or heading to class, these shoes - which are only $175 - will keep you fashionable at all hours of the day. The black leather exterior and gum sole wedges provide maximum comfort as well as traction for the unpredictable weather of the Windy City. After finally finding my black Lacoste Leren shoes, picking out an outfit for tonight will be a piece of
cake! Also unlike many other shoes I have worn in the past, these shoes won't give me blisters the day after, and I can still dance the night away without a care in the world. A perfect holiday goodie for any lucky girl, the unique blend of comfort and style truly allow one to walk into a wide-array of festive fetes without a care in the world. Time to head out with my Lerens, grab a cocktail with the girlfriends, and get ready to put some additional glam in Chicago's nightlife. |
