The programs also serve teens in adolescent parenting and maternity programs and expectant mothers in food and nutrition education programs throughout Cook and Lake counties.

“Our ongoing children’s programs are making a positive impact in the lives of thousands of Chicago’s disadvantaged children,” said Monsignor Michael M. Boland, Administrator, President and CEO of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago. “These programs provide an integral support system to children as they grow and develop physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.”

The Spirit of Saint Nicholas Ball celebrates the spirit of caring and generosity illustrated in the life of Saint Nicholas, the fourth century bishop known for his kindness, compassion and great love of children. Saint Nicholas is considered to be the model for Santa Claus. Each year his feast is commemorated all over the world on December 6.

Le Prestige du Monde will be attending to showcase the wonderful developments of the evening.

Some of Chicago’s top fitness enthusiasts gather to support the program that prepares girls for a lifetime of healthy living

CHICAGO – Girls on the Run-Chicago (GOTRC) celebrates the more than 27,000 girls it has helped to become strong, healthy women at its 13th Annual Sparkle & Shine Gala. The event is held Friday, November 16 at the landmark Drake Hotel and all funds raised help to underwrite scholarships for Girls on the Run participants and support program expansion in low-income communities throughout Chicagoland.

GOTRC is a non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident. Using a fun, experience-based after school curriculum which creatively integrates running, the innovative program for girls in grades 3-8 combines training for a 5k event with interactive lessons that encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development. The program culminates in a 5k event, which gives the girls a tangible sense of achievement as well as the framework for setting and achieving life goals, athletic or otherwise. “We have just finished conducting our annual evaluation which has shown, with statistical significance, that girls who complete the program have a stronger sense of identity, a greater acceptance of themselves, a healthier body image and an understanding of what it means to be physically and emotionally healthy.” Said Kristen Kainer-Turner, GOTRC Senior Program Manager.

During the 13th Annual Sparkle & Shine Gala, GOTRC will host its popular live and silent auctions featuring the best in sports & fitness, food, adventure, travel and more. High-profile items that will be up for auction at the Gala include a weekend in a Porsche Panamera; a private flight in a WWII plane, tickets to Jay Leno, Windy City Live, The New Ricki Lake Show, and The Wendy Williams Show; dinner for two at Girl & the Goat; a family membership to the Chicago History Museum; a golf foursome and lunch at the Olympia Fields Country Club and more.

Additionally, attendees will enjoy wine, beer and specialty drinks, passed hors d’oeuvres and live music
courtesy of Final Say. “Our annual gala helps support our scholarship fund that distributed more than $761,000 in program fees last year alone to ensure that every girl can participate in our life-changing program, regardless of financial need,” said Kainer-Turner.
