The Chicagoland area is experiencing several high-risk flooding areas. The most affected by the rain-pour include the Cook and Lake counties and in cities and towns such as Chicago, Park Ridge, Norridge, Winnetka, Elmwood Park, and Maywood, among others.
Flooded basements are very common, and reports indicate that over 112 homes in the Park Ridge area are suffering from flooded homes. If the basement is flooded, it is advised to avoid going into the affected area: calling 3-1-1 for aid is encouraged.
According to the United States Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), if a flood is present one should perform the following:
- Listen to the radio or television for information.
- Be aware that flash flooding can occur. If there is any possibility of a flash flood, move immediately to higher ground. Do not wait for instructions to move.
- Be aware of stream, drainage channels, canyons and other areas known to flood suddenly. Flash floods can occur in these areas with or without typical warnings such as rain clouds or heavy rain.
