"Family, and the warm, loving essence that comes with it, is often born in the kitchen. We spend some of our earliest days making memories by baking, dicing, chopping, and seasoning hearty meals with loved ones."
This is from the heart-warming introduction of The Spice of Life: Healthy and Delicious Recipes for Under $10. The popular and highly-anticipated cookbook by renowned Chicago icon Jorge Zavala has received praised from the literary and culinary community for its stylistic quality and internationally-inspired recipes. Zavala, a long-time global traveler and 35-year veteran of the culinary art, believes that each recipe is meant to warm the heart, inspire the soul, and heal the body and mind.
"Not only are (the meals) delicious and inexpensive...they are very easy to make, even for the inexperienced cook," stated Mr. Zavala.
A delicate blend of homemade meals, hors d'oeuvres, and dessert treats are found in The Spice of Life and we are very thankful for the fact that each ingredient used in most recipes is described for both taste and health-value. For example, we learn that bell peppers are a rich source of anti-oxidants and vitamin C while jalapeños may be used as a remedy for season allergies and cardiovascular problems. Pretty neat, huh?
Additionally, the recipes are very easy to follow and written in a fun and intimate manner. The author regularly starts recipes with heartfelt anecdotes from his childhood and those with close family members and friends, giving the book a joie d'etre feel that cannot easily be found in other recipe books.
We 120% approve of the magic within The Spice of Life and know our audience will truly love each and every one of the recipes discovered. We've also made it convenient to purchase this treat by following the link below:
While we would continue describing the wonders of chocolate holiday ham and Jorge Zavala's delicious flan, we simply need to find our way back to our kitchens to attempt to replicate the delicious treats found in The Spice of Life.

On October 30, 2015, The Girls On The Run Chicago (GOTRC) organization hosted their annual decadent event at the notable Drake Hotel Chicago. The highly-anticipated event, Run Like a Girl Soiree, was a delightful mix of industry insiders, business gurus, and style-conscious connoisseurs interested in toasting over a craft beer or two for a worthy cause.
The soiree, which promptly started at 8pm, invited guests to take part in one of Chicago's most interesting and fun benefits, which aimed to raise money for the organization's successful programs geared towards girls and young women. The GOTRC, a life-changing, non-profit program for girls in the 3rd through 8th grade, strives to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.
A prominent silent auction took place throughout the evening, allowing guests to bid on some very exciting items, including quality wines from all over the world. Meeting twice a week in small teams of 8 to 15 girls, the organization teaches life skills through dynamic, conversation-based lessons and running games. The 20-lesson curriculum is taught by certified Girls on the Run coaches and includes three parts: understanding ourselves, valuing relationships and teamwork and understanding how we connect with and shape the world at large.
A delicious array of cuisine was present for guests to savor, which included sliced beef brisket (yum!), gourmet pizza, burger sliders, and a fish taco buffet.
The fish taco buffet (also with a vegetarian option), was quite note-worthy as one could build their own tacos the way their heart desired. To wash it all down, a plethora of beverage options were present, from craft beers to custom-cocktails to crisp wine.
The organization uses running to inspire and motivate girls, encourage lifelong health and fitness, and build confidence through accomplishment. At each season's conclusion, the girls and their running buddies complete a 5k running event. Completing a 5k gives the girls a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. The result—making the seemingly impossible, possible and teaching girls that they are able to reach their goals.
While the delish wine and cocktails were quite popular, what stole the evening was the beer options at this year's soiree. Please sir, may we have some more?
While folks sipped on some of the evening's elixir, guests had an opportunity to purchase raffle tickets that would further benefit the organization's programs. The mission of the Girls On The Run Chicago is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum that uses running as a medium of both expression and wellness. The organization envisions a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.
As 10pm hit, everyone was ready to boogie. Like previous years' soirees, this year's dancing crowd did not disappoint and everyone got on their feet to shake it like a polaroid picture. The organization's core values, which include expressing joy through a positive attitude and nurturing actions, were present in the crowd.
In 2015, the Girls On The Run Chicago are hotter than ever and their annual soiree lives up to the hype, and then some. PdM has had the pleasure of engaging in such a high-energy rendezvous for a few years and we have to say that this year's event was one of the best in terms of energy, food and beverage options, and overall ambiance. By the end of the evening, everyone - young and old, new and old friends - made sure to leave a little wise (and a little happier) knowing that running like a girl is actually pretty cool.
Cheers to another beautiful event, ladies and gents! We cannot wait until next year!

Nom, nom, nom. We all know that phrase quite well, and with the advent of social media we've been accustomed to using it across platforms in reference to eating, crunching, and - ultimately, munching on something. However, its origins truly come from an adorable yellow character known to the world as PAC-MAN. On May 22nd, 1980, this simple yet lovable video game phenomenon was born in the land of the rising sun, Japan. On May 22nd, 2015 - 35 years after the seasoned and international icon became a household name - Chicago, and the world, celebrated PAC-MAN's birthday.
The insider-only celebration, which took place in NAMCO USA's brand new and exciting dining/entertainment venue, Level 257. The establishment, inspired by PAC-MAN himself, is a vibrant mix of savory cocktails, delish hors d'oeuvres, and a wide-range of entertainment options, which include some of the most popular arcade games and even bowling lanes for guests. In addition to the evening's elixirs and gaming, the highlight of the evening included a rare appearance in the Western Hemisphere of PAC-MAN's own creator, Toru Iwatani.
When Mr. Iwatani was asked to describe (via a translator) how he feels about PAC-MAN 35 years later, he had this to say:
"PAC-MAN is is for everyone, the world has embraced his essence and accepted him as one of their very own. We don't know what the future will bring for our friend (PAC-MAN), but it is certain that we would like future generations to continue enjoying (the game)."
The VIP reception, which included a diverse-array of industry-insiders, style-icons, and media from Chicago, Japan, and France, was a delightful blend of creativity and casual elegance. Throughout the evening, guests could not help but sip on a delicious glass of chardonnay while dancing to the 1982 original hit song, "PAC-MAN Fever" by the original creator, Jerry Buckner of Buckner and Garcia.
Several exciting pieces of PAC-MAN memorabilia was available for VIP insiders, including a limited-edition 35th Anniversary PAC-MAN collectors t-shirt and sunglasses. In addition to the highly-coveted swag-bags, Chicago bakery Toni Patisserie presente the official birthday cake to PAC-MAN and his guests.
Guests had the chance to speak with their long-time gaming idols, make new friends, and enjoy savory treats throughout the evening. One guest made it a point to mention to a friend that "(he'd) never seen anything like this...it's truly a wonderful time and a once-in-a-lifetime experience."
Now, you can't have a PAC-MAN-themed event without craft YELLOW cocktails! Ah, yes, and there was also a fusion elixir, a pink one we might add, that was a healthy mix of poignant and fun. Of course, gaming is much more fun when you have one of these in your hand.
Some of NAMCO's who's who made a special guest appearance to celebrate PAC-MAN's big 3-5. While their English was limited, each one of them expressed a fervid interest in securing the happiness of every gamer, every experience with PAC-MAN for future generations to come.
Celebrating PAC-MAN was more than an anniversary, a birthday bash, and a rendezvous: it was a celebration of time and how so much has changed in 35 years, yet how the important things, like a child discovering the cute yellow creature for the first time, are ever-present. Congratulations to Level 257, NAMCO, and all the wonderful individuals who made the anniversary bash a success. Oh, and happy birthday, PAC-MAN: you are aging gracefully, my friend.

Ditch the poorly made margaritas and say goodbye to artificial lemon juice.
Below are the four essentials to making the perfect margarita:
1. Avoid cheap tequila – If you are going to get serious about margaritas, you’ll need to invest in high-quality tequila. The key is being 100% agave, which means no additional sugars were added during fermentation process.
2. Use real lime –using real lime juice is just as important. Avoid the artificial lime plastic ball, or any prepackaged sour mix and buy real limes. Limes are not expensive and they last a long time. This will make a big difference!
3. Get the orange stuff –Triple sec is key! This orange flavored liquor is sweet and it’s made from dried orange peels. You can substitute with blue curacao to make a blue margarita if you are feeling adventurous.
4. It’s all about the measurements – The basic ratio measurement of a margarita is 2:1:1 which means two part tequila, one part of triple sec and one part lime juice. This will always depend on how strong you like your tequila so feel free to experiment with it.
Furthermore, we couldn't leave you without offering Prestige du Monde's own craft cocktail, La Femme Rouge. Our signature tequila cocktail, which was created one breezy summer night in 2014, serves as the basis for our team's rendezvous, event planning affairs, and public relations campaigns. Without a Femme Rouge our endeavors would simply be cute conversations: why not turn cute into raging sexy?
Le Femme Rouge Margarita Ingredients
· 2oz Tequila
· Large Bar spoon of apricot jam
· ¾ oz pomegranate juice
· ¼ oz simple syrup
Pour all ingredients in a cocktail shaker; shake hard and pour into an ice filled old fashioned glass. Garnish with kumquats (in season), apricots and a mint sprig.
